RAMON PUIG CUYàS

Ramon Puig Cuyàs.
Ramon Puig Cuyàs Mataró, Barcelona, 1953) is one of the leading figures in contemporary art jewellery and among the field's most internationally recognised artists. With a career spanning more than four decades, his work has played a significant role in defining contemporary jewellery as an artistic language within the wider context of contemporary visual arts.

He studied Jewellery at Escola Massana in Barcelona between 1969 and 1974. From 1977 to 2016, he taught jewellery design and projects at the same institution, where his pedagogical work contributed significantly to establishing the international reputation of Escola Massana's Jewellery Department.

A teacher, lecturer and exhibition curator, Puig Cuyàs has been one of the foremost advocates for contemporary jewellery as an artistic discipline. He has been invited to lecture and teach at schools and universities in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Denmark, Finland, Italy and Portugal.

Since 1974, his work has been exhibited continuously in museums, galleries and institutions worldwide and is represented in major public and private collections across Europe, the United States, Canada and other countries.

Among his many distinctions are the Fundació General Mediterrània Graduation Award (Barcelona, 1975), the prestigious Herbert Hofmann Prize, awarded in Munich in 1981, 1984 and 1995, and the Special Mention of the Design Jury at the Barcelona City Awards (2001).

Ramon on his work:
My work arises from the need to structure form through a rigorous compositional syntax capable of creating a kind of visual polyphony. I am interested in building each piece as a composition of interconnected elements that establish relationships of harmony and contrast, creating spaces rather than solid volumes. I seek works that are not fully revealed at first glance, but instead invite the eye to move slowly through them, discovering their rhythms, silences and visual pathways.

Creating is a way of searching for what I do not yet know about myself. It means moving beyond certainty, allowing intuition to precede thought. Understanding almost always emerges through making, in the ongoing dialogue between materials and forms. For me, making becomes a way of thinking.

This dialogue with matter is also a form of belonging. The gesture of the hand transforming, touching and questioning the material connects me with those who came before me and those who will follow. Within this shared gesture, I recognise a deeply human continuity.

Ultimately, each work is an attempt to preserve a moment of life. Like a small reliquary, it seeks to hold an experience and project it into the future, gently resisting the passing of time and oblivion.
