Born in Sapporo (Japan) in 1958. Studied Fine Arts and Architecture in the United States and spent decades practicing architecture in Los Angeles, New York, Zurich, and Basel. In 2025, she received the Grand Prix – award of the Mayor of the City of Gdansk at the Amberif Design Award for her brooch Of Shadows.
After years in architecture, Gotô turned to jewellery as a space to explore ornament freed from function. She crafts brooches the way one might design a light fixture—hiding the mechanism and showing only the effect, the radiance. Her work, held in collections such as the mudac in Lausanne, combines architectural precision with a sensory richness that touches not just the eyes, but also the skin and even the mouth.
The scale of my ornament, she says, is what fits in the mouth. Inspired by wagashi, traditional Japanese confections, her pieces become universal objects of desire. Local in material and intimate in scale, they reach across cultural boundaries through their tactile and visual allure.
At Hannah Gallery, we welcome her return with the exhibition Trilogia: Echoes of Babel, Adorned Words, a new chapter in her exploration of language, ornament, and the eloquence of silence.

Artista nascuda a Sapporo (Japó) el 1958. Va estudiar Belles Arts i Arquitectura als Estats Units, i va exercir com a arquitecta durant dècades a Los Angeles, Nova York, Zuric i Basilea. El 2025 ha estat guardonada amb el Grand Prix - award of the Mayor of the City of Gdansk a l’Amberif Design Award per la seva peça Of Shadows.
Després d’anys dedicada a l’arquitectura, Gotô troba en la joieria un terreny on explorar l’ornament alliberat de funció: crea fermalls com qui projecta llum en una paret, amagant la tècnica i mostrant només l’efecte, la presència. La seva obra, present en col·leccions com la del mudac de Lausana, combina el rigor constructiu amb una sensibilitat que apel·la als sentits —la vista, el tacte i fins i tot el gust.
L’escala del meu ornament és la que cap a la boca, afirma. Inspirada pels wagashi, dolços tradicionals japonesos, Gotô concep les seves peces com una temptació universal. En elles, el local i el global es fonen: un fermall pot provocar desig, independenment de la cultura o experiència de qui l’observa.
