ANNELIES PLANTEYDT
Annelies Planteijdt, 1956, Rotterdam, The Netherlands. She studied first at the Vakschool Schoonhoven-NL from 1974-1978 and then at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam-NL from 1978 where she graduated in 1983. She did several study- and working periods as well as residencies, 1981 study period at Giampaolo Babetto-Padova-IT, 1985 working period Barcelona-ES, 1992/93 working period Bratislava-SK, 2015 artist in residence IK-island-Oost Souburg-NL and 2016 working period Berlin-DE. From 2000 on she has been working on the ‘Beautiful City’ series, a still ongoing body of work consisting of groundplans that turn into necklaces when worn. Her work is represented in private and public collections as well as in museums and galleries all over the world. During the years she has given lectures about her work in London-GB, Lucca-IT, Munich-DE and Beijing-CN. She is a recipient of several awards, among others the Emmy van Leersum prize, the Marzee prize and the Herbert Hoffmann prize. From 1985 she regularly received grants from the Netherlands Foundation for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture (Fonds BKVB)-Amsterdam-NL and the Mondriaanfonds-Amsterdam-NL.
Annelies on her work:
Beautiful City - Album is the latest in a series of artistic explorations which I began in 2000. As I continue to investigate the ideas and aesthetics of maps, these new pieces chart my personal environment. Each of the still life necklaces in this collection has a ‘relation’, an object from my immediate, everyday surroundings and to me these objects and jewels belong together like a diptych. They are personal things that have been part of my life for a long time, speaking to me, informing my work, and shown together they become a sort of three-dimensional archive, a dialogue between me, object and environment and provide an insight into my way of seeing and working. I like to play with scale in my work. Here, the necklaces are made to my own scale, with the smaller elements within them on a minor scale referencing both necklace and object. The ‘relations’ (objects) operate on another scale and order altogether (daily life things like music, literature, scent, kitchen supplies) so each piece encapsulates three scales, interrelated, but working on different levels, in different realities, offering so a perspective.
Public collections:
Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, NL, Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam, NL, Kunstmuseum, The Hague, NL, Museum Arnhem, Arnhem, NL, CODA, Apeldoorn, NL, Textielmuseum, Tilburg, NL, Design Museum, Den Bosch, NL, Zeeuws Museum, Middelburg, NL, Marzee collection, Galerie Marzee, Nijmegen, NL, Knapp collection, New York, US, Rotasa Foundation, US, Helen Williams Drutt collection, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, US, Slovak National Gallery, Bratislava, SK, Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris-FR, Schmuckmuseum, Pforzheim, DE, Neue Sammlung, Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich, DE, RCA collection/V&A Museum, London, UK.
