A Few things in Common
Fritz Maierhofer's bracelet on display at Hannah Gallery.
Fritz Maierhofer (Vienna, 1941) is one of the pioneering figures of European Contemporary Jewellery. Trained as a goldsmith, he began an artistic exploration in London in the late 1960s that challenged the conventions of traditional jewellery. His introduction of industrial and non-precious materials, his dialogue with sculpture and the visual arts, and a new understanding of the relationship between jewellery and the body contributed to expanding the boundaries of the discipline. With an internationally recognised career, including exhibitions at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and a retrospective at the MAK in Vienna in 2015, Maierhofer has developed a distinctive artistic language in which each piece becomes a form of expression and communication.
The nine new pieces by Fritz Maierhofer at Hannah Gallery span more than two decades of the artist’s practice, from works dating back to 2001 to recent pieces made in 2025. Together, they reflect his ongoing interest in colour, geometry and the possibilities of industrial materials and technics.
The anodised aluminium necklace and bracelet, cut directly from a sheet of metal, enclose the neck or wrist while emphasising parts of the body, such as the face or the hand.
The Corian rings reveal a more spontaneous aspect of Maierhofer’s approach to materials. Created directly in the working process, each ring develops through intuitive decisions made in response to the material.
The more recent pieces also revisit Maierhofer’s signature bracelets, recognised by their simple geometric designs and use of colour. Seen alongside the earlier works, the new arrivals offer a glimpse into a practice that has continued to evolve while returning to certain forms, materials and ideas over time.
